Why some women stay consistent… and others start over every September.
I’ve seen it every year for more than 25 years.
Summer has a way of pulling people away from their goals.
The kids are out of school. Vacations are booked. Weekends fill up with cottages, BBQs, weddings, and family events. The weather is beautiful, and suddenly your workout routine doesn’t seem quite as important.
But here’s the truth…
It’s not the season. It’s your response to the season.
One of my favourite formulas has guided me for years:
Event + Response = Outcome
I use it almost every day—especially when life gets challenging.
I can’t always control what happens.
I can control how I respond.
Sometimes I don’t like my first response. That’s when I remind myself that I have the power to change it.
And that’s exactly what successful people do.
Not because life is easier for them…
Because their response is different.
Summer doesn’t have to derail your progress.
Every July, I notice something interesting.
Attendance usually drops by about 30%.
But I also see something else.
Many of our 5:00 p.m. members simply shift to the 6:15 a.m. or 8:15 a.m. classes because evenings become busy with family, cottages, vacations, and summer activities.
They didn’t stop training.
They adapted.
That’s the Summer Mindset.
Instead of asking…
“How do I fit my life around my workouts?”
They ask…
“How do I fit my workouts into my summer?”
It’s a small shift in thinking that creates a completely different outcome.
The 5 Biggest Summer Momentum Killers
1. “I’ll Get Back on Track in September.”
Event: Summer arrives.
Response: Workouts stop. Nutrition slips.
Outcome: Momentum disappears, energy drops, and September becomes a comeback instead of a continuation.
Better response:
Don’t wait until September.
Book your workouts now, just like any other appointment.
Even 2–3 workouts a week is enough to protect the progress you’ve worked so hard to build since January.
Remember…
Consistency beats perfection.
2. Schedule Drift
Late nights.
Weekend getaways.
Sleeping in.
Before long, your routine disappears.
Better response:
Anchor your day with one healthy habit.
Maybe it’s your morning workout.
Maybe it’s a walk.
Maybe it’s meal prep on Sundays.
Don’t rebuild everything.
Reconnect with one habit first.
3. Summer FOMO
This one gets me too.
Every August, I find myself thinking…
“I haven’t spent enough time outside.”
Our Canadian summers are short.
We naturally want to enjoy every minute.
Unfortunately, many people remove exercise from their schedule instead of adjusting it.
By September they feel sluggish, tired, and overwhelmed because they’re rebuilding from scratch.
Better response:
Train earlier.
Choose cooler mornings.
Pick evening classes.
Even a shorter workout keeps your momentum alive.
Remember…
Something will always beat nothing.
4. All-or-Nothing Thinking
You missed one workout…
Now it’s been a week.
One BBQ becomes an entire weekend.
Then suddenly…
“I’ll start Monday.”
Better response:
Forget yesterday.
Focus on the next decision.
The next meal.
The next workout.
The next class.
That’s where progress lives.
5. Losing Your “Why”
When life gets busy…
Purpose fades.
Without purpose…
Discipline usually follows.
Better response:
Reconnect with your goal.
Why did you start?
How do you want to feel 30 days from now?
Share it with your coach.
Write it down.
Talk about it.
Purpose fuels consistency.
You’re Not Starting Over…
You’re simply reconnecting.
If summer has pulled you off track…
Don’t wait for the perfect Monday.
Take the next step.
Book one workout.
Drink more water.
Go for a walk.
Prepare one healthy meal.
Momentum returns much faster than most people think.
And remember…
Event + Response = Outcome
You can’t always control the event.
But you can always choose your response.
Let’s make August your strongest month yet.
