After decades of coaching women, fall is the season I encourage people to take advantage of. The reason is practical: routines tend to settle down.

Summer brings vacations, weekends away, late dinners and changing schedules. Those things are worth enjoying, but they can make consistency difficult. Once school starts and the calendar becomes more predictable, you have a better opportunity to give your workouts a regular place in your week.

Predictability helps. When you know when you’re training, when you’re shopping and what you’re eating tomorrow, following through requires fewer daily decisions.

But the biggest opportunity is in your mindset.

It’s easy to spend the fall thinking, “The holidays are coming. I’ll start in January.” That thought can turn several useful months into a waiting period.

You can make progress during those months. You can get stronger, improve your fitness, practise preparing meals and build confidence in your ability to keep promises to yourself.

You don’t need an empty calendar to begin. You need a plan that accounts for the calendar you have.

Thanksgiving dinner, a birthday or a busy weekend doesn’t have to erase your routine. Plan for it, enjoy the occasion and return to your next scheduled workout or meal. Learning to do that is part of becoming consistent.

And don’t wait to feel motivated every day.

Book the class. Put your shoes by the door. Prepare your lunch. Make the first action easier to take. Some days, the willingness to continue arrives after you’ve started moving.

There’s something powerful about entering December with momentum already behind you. You’ve collected evidence that you can show up when life is busy. You’ve stopped treating one imperfect day as a reason to abandon the week.

That confidence carries further than a burst of enthusiasm.

Use the fall to build it. Start with a few commitments you can repeat, give them space in your schedule and follow through. January can become the next chapter of your progress, rather than another first attempt.
