What Reformer Pilates Progression Actually Looks Like

One of the biggest misconceptions about Reformer Pilates is that progression simply means doing “harder workouts.”

In reality, true progression is about control, positioning, and skill — not speed or intensity.

In a recent video, we showed two of our instructors performing the same five Reformer exercises at different levels: Level 1.5 (Progression) and Level 2 / 3. At first glance, the movements may look similar — but when you look closer, the differences are significant.

As you move beyond Level 1.5, the expectations change:

  • Where you stand, kneel, or sit on the reformer

  • How much body weight you’re supporting

  • The amount of control required through your core and hips

  • The precision of transitions between movements

  • The ability to maintain alignment under fatigue

At Level 1.5, the focus is still on:

  • mastering technique

  • refining movement patterns

  • building strength without rushing

At Level 2 and beyond, movements demand:

  • greater balance and coordination

  • stronger core control

  • more independence on the machine

  • faster, more complex sequencing

This is why we start everyone at Level 1 and Level 1.5 during the first phase of our Reformer Pilates launch.

Not because we want to slow people down —

but because confidence, results, and longevity are built on strong foundations.

Whether you’re new to Reformer Pilates, returning after time away, or someone who’s tried it before and felt unsure, learning the machine properly makes all the difference.

Progression isn’t about skipping steps.

It’s about mastering them.
